Harrods Food Halls Books form a long-running series of trade catalogues issued by the celebrated Knightsbridge department store from around the turn of the twentieth century, combining illustrated listings of the Food Halls' wares with recipes designed to promote their use. As hybrid sales catalogues and domestic cookery aids, they document the emergence of luxury grocery retailing in Edwardian London and the increasing convergence of commerce and culinary instruction.

Cooking from this book

Potted Stilton

Signature dish

A jar of Potted Stilton feels emblematic of the Harrods Food Halls publications, which long celebrated the theatre of their famous cheese counters and hampers. Rich, mellowed blue cheese is blended with butter and a fortified wine, then sealed beneath a buttery layer to keep on the pantry shelf. Appearing in various Harrods promotional booklets across the twentieth century, it captures the store's image of English luxury, leisured entertaining and the well stocked Knightsbridge larder.

An editorial note on a dish associated with this book, written for The Coquinist. It is not a reproduction of the book's recipe.
