The Coquinist is a curated library of the cookery books that matter: the manuscripts, household manuals and national classics that record how people have actually cooked and eaten across centuries and continents. For now it is a place for information and inspiration: a catalogue you can search, filter and read your way through.
Alongside the catalogue, the journal follows attempts to cook from these books, reviving old menus and recipes where the texts are out of copyright, and reporting honestly on how they turn out.
Sources & licensing
Descriptions and images are drawn from public-domain and openly-licensed sources, and every catalogue entry credits where its material came from. Recipe and menu excerpts are reproduced only from works whose text is in the public domain. If you believe something is mis-attributed, please get in touch.
