The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book, first published in 1954, interleaves recipes with reminiscences of life in Paris alongside Gertrude Stein, blending culinary instruction with modernist memoir. Drawing on French, American, and expatriate traditions, it became celebrated for the contributed recipe for hashish fudge, popularly known as the Toklas brownie, which secured the volume a lasting place in twentieth-century literary and culinary culture.

Haschich Fudge
Signature dishForever entwined with this memoir-cookbook is the notorious Haschich Fudge, a confection of fruit, nuts, spices and a certain pulverised herb. Contributed by the artist Brion Gysin and slipped into the first edition almost as a private joke, it scandalised and delighted readers in equal measure, later lending its nickname to a whole genre of baked goods. It captures perfectly the bohemian, modernist circle Toklas and Stein kept, where avant-garde mischief met the pleasures of the table.
