An English manuscript receipt book of the eighteenth century, compiled in the hand of one or more household members and gathering culinary recipes alongside medicinal remedies, household preparations, and domestic advice. Such volumes circulated within families and among neighbours, recording regional practice and informal exchange largely absent from printed cookery. Though a relatively common survival, they remain valuable witnesses to vernacular foodways and the domestic literacy of Englishwomen.

Seed Cake
Signature dishThe seed cake is a hallmark of English domestic baking and appears repeatedly in household manuscript receipt books of the eighteenth century. A rich, buttery cake perfumed with caraway, it was served at christenings, harvest suppers, and afternoon refreshment. Its frequent presence in handwritten compilations of this period reflects both the affection English households held for it and the importance of preserving family versions across generations of cooks and mistresses.
