Eating for Victory gathers the instructional leaflets issued by the British Ministry of Food during the Second World War, distributed to households navigating rationing between 1939 and 1945. The series advised cooks on stretching limited meat, fat, and sugar allowances, making use of unfamiliar ingredients such as dried egg, and preserving the garden harvest. Printed as cheap ephemera for mass circulation, complete runs survive only rarely and command a substantial premium.

Woolton Pie

Signature dish

Named after Lord Woolton, the Minister of Food, this humble vegetable pie became the emblem of British wartime cookery and features prominently across the Ministry's leaflets. A filling of root vegetables under a potato or wheatmeal crust, it was devised to stretch the ration and lift morale through cheerful, patriotic eating. Today it stands as shorthand for the entire Eating for Victory campaign and the make-do spirit these fragile pamphlets preserved.
